If you can, find and hire a tutor. Learning from a CD/book is fine! But a tutor can answer your questions and give you individualized help, and that obviously is not possible with a book or CD. Naturally, a language tutor should be fluent in the language they’re tutoring. They can teach you about the different dialects within the language you are learning.
Learning the local dialect of a place you may be visiting really will help you with interacting with people. A tutor can also teach you the informal understanding of words in local dialects. Also, CDs and books tend to be more formal. A tutor can teach you slang!
Try to develop your ‘ear’ for Spanish, or any new language. Some languages have more of an oral-emphasized than written. You will still need to learn how to ‘hear’ a language as long as it’s still alive. Knowing how to write the alphabet or how to write a correct sentence will only get you so far. You need to be able to understand the language when you hear it. The best results will come from listening to the language whenever possible. When you find yourself being able to identify your language after hearing just a few words you’ll know you are on your way to really learning Spanish (or whatever language you have chosen)!
Simple flashcards are a way you can easily test your knowledge. This is a simple but effective way to reinforce your knowledge. They can help you memorize words, one of the most basic and most crucial areas of building your language skills. With flashcards you can quiz yourself on vocabulary and grammar and tenses. Flashcards are usually pretty small so you can take them with you when you leave the house and work on your Spanish in your spare time. It can also be useful to work with someone else and have them test you with the flashcards. All you have to do is use one side for Spanish and the other for your first language; it’s that easy!
Learning a language does not have to be difficult. As far as languages go, Spanish is certainly not considered to be the most difficult. When it comes to learning a language, there are many ways to proceed. Not everyone has to take the same approach; ask yourself what seems like the best choice. It becomes much easier to learn when you find a teacher, course or system that really appeals to you. Everyone had to start learning a language at some point; you too can become fluent in the language of your choice!
